Ceramic Braces

Like metal braces, ceramic braces are fixed to the front of the teeth, but they are made with clear ceramic blocks and tooth-coloured wires, making them much less noticeable.

On top of being much more subtle looking, ceramic braces also offer a more comfortable experience for the patient, as the ceramic blocks cause less friction and, therefore, less pain and discomfort. Of course, as with any orthodontic treatment, you should expect some level of discomfort as the archwires gently move the teeth into better alignment.

As with traditional fixed braces, patients will have to take special care of their oral health, using certain toothbrushes to ensure food and debris are removed and to avoid tooth decay.

You may have to avoid certain foods, such as chewy toffee or popcorn, as they can cause problems with the braces. Ceramic braces are also more prone to staining than metal braces, and we would advise cutting down on or avoiding food and beverages that have a tendency to stain.

Ceramic braces can get to work in a similar timeframe to other orthodontic treatments, with some patients wearing them for as little as six months. In most cases, however, patients should expect to be wearing their ceramic braces for 12 months or more.

We’ll always recommend a retainer after any orthodontic treatment. This is to help prevent the teeth from moving back into their original position.
