Crowns

Sitting over the top of a tooth, crowns act as a cap for the tooth, covering up the damage and further strengthening and preserving the rest of the natural tooth.

The most common cause of needing a crown is damage or decay. Crowns can also be used to address purely aesthetic issues, as well as to finish a root canal treatment where the tooth in question is in need of restoration in order to return to full function.

Once usually made of a precious metal such as gold, crowns are now more often than not made from porcelain or another material such as Emax that is better able to mimic the surface and shade of a natural tooth. With modern materials, there’s no need for anyone to know you’ve had a crown placed, and they can fit in practically seamlessly with the rest of the mouth.

When receiving a crown, you’ll first come into the practice so that we can prepare the tooth in question for placement and take digital scans of the mouth. These will be sent off to our dental laboratory partners, who will make your personal crown just for you. Once it’s ready, we’ll carefully place it using special dental cement, making sure it is secure and comfortable in the mouth and that the bite is correct.

Most treatments for a crown can be concluded in two appointments, although sometimes it can take longer. This is usually due to more damage being present.
