When teeth are damaged and cannot be treated through a simple filling or other form of treatment, we often recommend the placement of a crown.

Frequently asked questions

What is a crown?

Sitting over the top of a tooth, crowns act as a cap for the tooth, covering up the damage and further strengthening and preserving the rest of the natural tooth.

Why might I need a crown?

The most common cause of needing a crown is damage or decay. Crowns can also be used to address purely aesthetic issues, as well as to finish a root canal treatment where the tooth in question is in need of restoration in order to return to full function.

What are crowns made of?

Once usually made of a precious metal such as gold, crowns are now more often than not made from porcelain or another material such as Emax that is better able to mimic the surface and shade of a natural tooth.

With modern materials, there’s no need for anyone to know you’ve had a crown placed, and they can fit in practically seamlessly with the rest of the mouth.

What is the treatment for receiving a crown like?

When receiving a crown, you’ll first come into the practice so that we can prepare the tooth in question for placement and take digital scans of the mouth. These will be sent off to our dental laboratory partners, who will make your personal crown just for you.

Once it’s ready, we’ll carefully place it using special dental cement, making sure it is secure and comfortable in the mouth and that the bite is correct.

How many appointments are necessary in placing a crown?

Most treatments for a crown can be concluded in two appointments, although sometimes it can take longer. This is usually due to more damage being present.

My tooth extraction was dealt with professionally and with compassion. I was constantly asked if I was alright and if I was feeling any pain. Everything was explained to me before the procedure and also what I needed to do after the procedure. I am very impressed with the care I received today and indeed the care I have always received especially as I am a very nervous patient when it comes to Dentistry. Pedro is fantastic I used to have a phobia of going to the dentist but he is so kind, patient and gentle and I really don't mind my visits now. Jo is a brilliant hygienist my feel teeth do good after my reqular visit to her.I cannot recommend this dental practice highly enough I wouldn't go anywhere else all the staff are lovely.

This is a truly welcoming dental practice. The staff are all really friendly and helpful from reception to the dental team. The Clinic is clean and well set out and is a welcoming environment. I saw Jurate Vietrenkiene and she and her assistant were very kind, reassuring and knowledgeable. I was greeted by a very personable receptionist and seen on time by the dentist. The dentist conducted his examination of my teeth without causing me any discomfort, unlike previous surgeries where the dentist seemed to take great delight in poking my gums with a sharp implement. Everybody that I know goes there.If you can get in, then sign up; Ana is off on maternity leave, but thereis a kind and caring lady dentist covering for her.I used to really dread going to the dentist, but not any more.

Does anyone like going to the dentist? Probably not but the dentists here do their best to make that experience as good as possible! The surgery is bright and clean with good reception staff. The dentist that I see is a fantastic man who clearly loves his job and does everything he can to make your appointment less tense and scary. New owners are Portuguese, so don't get confused with dentists there from the past. I am terrified of dentists, but my teeth were in need of work, I had 2 painlessly removed and some other work all without pain. I have now got my wife going there who also is terrified of dentists but she like me had no pain having the work done. Without a doubt the best dentist I have used.
